It important to answer the question “Why Nursing?” Every nursing students answer is going to be different. But then several nurses are in the profession for various reasons best known to them. Passion is the first and best reason for choosing to be a nurse.
There are a lot of things that I have learned and I know that there are many more things to learn. I have compiled 10 things that I feel are the most important for Nursing Students to know.
10 Things Every Nursing Student Should Know
- Nursing Is Unpredictable
Nursing is dirty. This is something that I did not fully expect. Every time I would go to clinical I would never know what to expect. That is what nursing is, you never know what will happen next, and that’s okay.
- Do Not Worry About Your GPA
The huge thing I always worried about is my GPA. I started the Nursing Program thinking that I will have a 3.5 or a 4.0. But NO! The further I have progressed in the program, I have realized that my GPA is not that important and that in the end, if I received a B, I should not be disappointed in myself.
- Every Answer To A Question Is Correct
How the Nursing Boards are set up, every answer to a question is going to be correct. However, it will be your job to find the “most” correct answer. What I have found out, is that there will always be two answers that you will be able to throw out right away. There are many study books that helps you with this type of questions.
- You Will Always Be Tired
No matter how much sleep you think you are getting, you will always be tired. It seems like there is not enough hours in the day to be able to do everything that you need to do. I have found my own tricks to keep me awake. Also, I have learned the benefits of taking 15 minute naps during the day.
- Reading A Book A Night Is Ridiculous
Reading 300+ pages a night just will not happen. Skimming has become my best friend. I go through the book and find the key concepts that are relevant to the content we are going through in class.
- Being Not Okay Is Alright
After being in the program for two years now as a nursing student, I have realized it is perfectly fine to take a day for yourself. You are the future of the Nursing profession. You need to be able to listen to your body. I find myself in bed all day at weekends because I am so overly tired. Sometimes I eat more than I should, and drink too many soft drinks. On top of this, you are also with patients who can make an emotional impact on you. When someone asks if you are okay and you truly are not, tell them what is going on. This will be the most beneficial thing for your emotional sanity.
- No Question Is Senseless
Nursing is tough. It will require you to ask many questions that to you might seem stupid. Just remember that if you have a question, the person next to you is probably having the same question.
- Maintain A Social Life
Nursing School can easily take over your life as nursing students. I have found that I have done better in school while still hanging out with my non-nursing friends. They give me a break from the everyday struggles that most nursing colleagues go through. They help me keep my sanity and are always good people to talk to about the program and some of the things that I have experienced.
- Keep A Reliable Emotional Relief Partner
Through-out school, and defiantly the nursing program, I have found myself calling my mom for than once a day. She is my best friend. Most of the times I am freaking out about deadlines, crying because I had a bad day, or I just need to talk to someone, she always has an open mind and gives me great advice on what to do. I am so grateful to have her in my life.
- Have Fun Filled Time
Yes, nursing school is hard, but it is so important to have fun. Make sure you make time to hang out with friends, and overall, enjoy being in the program!
