The first set of private universities in Nigeria emerged in 1999 and 19 years after, the country has got over 40 private tertiary institutions with more springing up. Most often public tertiary education in Nigeria is plagued with lack of funds, poor infrastructure, students unrest and incessant strike actions that often disrupt academic calendars. These and many other issues are the reasons parents who have the means prefer to send their children to private universities and at most considerably cheap, where the system is believed to be a lot better.
Lead City University
Located in the largest city in Nigeria, Ibadan, Lead City was established in 2005 University was established in 2005 and its fees range from N160,000 to N625,000.
Joseph Ayo Babalola University
JABU as the university is fondly called was established in 2006 by the Christ Apostolic Church Worldwide. The university is located in Ikeji-Arakeji in Osun State. The university’s 2017/2018 tuition fee range from N220,000 to N800,00.
Ajayi Crowther University
Founded in 2005 by the Anglican Communion, the university is located in Oyo state and its fees range from N195,600 to N670,000.
Caleb University, based in Lagos was established in January 2008 by Prince Oladega Adebogun. The tuition for the 2018/2019 academic session at Caleb University starts from nothing less than N230,000 per semester.
Benson Idahosa University
Popularly known as BUI, Benson Idahosa University, established in 2002 is a private, Christian educational institution, located in Benin City, Edo state.
In its 2017/2018 fees schedule, the institution pegged its tuition between N297,300 and N1,179,000 depending on the course.
Achievers University (AU) was established in 2007 and is located in Owo, Ondo state. The 2017/2018 tuition fees of the institution is between N270,000 and N600,000 depending of the course.
American University of Nigeria
The American University of Nigeria is a private university in northeastern Nigeria that offers American style higher education programs. The school is situated in Yola and it is believed to be one of the very expensive universities in the country as it has its tuition around N310,000.00 including meals and accommodation. The university is reportedly owned by the former Vice-President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Rhema University is a faith-based founded in 2009 in the city of Aba in Abia State. The tuition fee for freshers at the university is between N452,000 and N464,000.
Novena University was established in 2005 by Chuks Ochonogor in Delta state. The university charges between a range of N450,000 to N564,000 as tuition fees.
Bells University of Technology
Bells University of Technology also known as Bellstech is the first private university of technology established in Nigeria. It was established in 2004.
The University was established in 2004 by former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and it is situated in Otta Ogun state. The tuition fees range from N553,000 to N643,000 for 100 level students.
Redeemer’s University is one of the prominent faith-based tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It was established in 2005 by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.
